The salsa genre emerged in the 1960s in New York, United States, although it has its roots in Afro-Caribbean rhythms coming mainly from Cuba and Puerto Rico. It was born from the mixture of Cuban son, mambo, rumba and Latin jazz, created by Caribbean musicians who emigrated to the city and began to merge their styles.
Salsa became a very important cultural expression, as it represented the identity, joy and struggle of the Latino communities.
In addition, its contagious rhythm and energy made it one of the most popular and representative genres of Latin music in the world.
The evolution of salsa began in the 1960s, when Caribbean rhythms mixed with jazz and other urban styles in New York. During the 70s, the genre reached great popularity thanks to artists and orchestras such as Fania All Stars, who spread salsa throughout Latin America.
En los años 80, la salsa se modernizó con nuevos arreglos musicales y letras más románticas, dando origen a la llamada salsa romántica o salsa sensual, con exponentes como Marc Anthony y Eddie Santiago.
En la actualidad, la salsa continúa evolucionando al fusionarse con otros géneros como el pop, el reguetón y la música urbana, manteniendo su esencia rítmica pero adaptándose a los gustos de las nuevas generaciones.
