The corridos tumbados are a subgenre of Mexican regional music that emerged in Mexico, mainly in the north of the country, at the end of the 2010s (approx. 2018–2019).

They are born from the fusion between the traditional corrido (which historically narrated exploits, characters and real events) with modern influences such as:

  • Trap
  • Hip-hop
  • Rap
  • Música urbana

The corridos tumbados connected with the young people because they mixed tradition and modernity, breaking with the idea that regional music was only for older generations. In addition, they managed to take the Mexican regional to international stages.

The expansion began thanks to YouTube, Spotify, TikTok and Apple Music. Artists were no longer dependent on large record companies: they uploaded their music directly and connected with a young audience that shared songs, fragments and trends. TikTok was key for many corridos to go viral.

Although they were born in Mexico, the lying corridos quickly expanded to the United States, especially among young Mexican Americans. From there, the genre came to:

• Latin America

• Spain

• Some parts of Europe

Collaborations between regional and urban artists accelerated the expansion. By working with singers of other genres, the corridos tumbados reached new audiences.

Criticism for letters related to violence or drug culture did not slow down growth; on the contrary, they generated debate, media attention and greater dissemination, which further boosted its expansion.
